Breast augmentation is a procedure that involves inserting breast implants to increase the size and projection of the patient’s breasts to their preference.

Either silicone or saline breast implants can be used, and implants can also vary in size, texture, shape, and projection. These options allow us to find the best breast implants for each patient’s aesthetic goals.

The patient also has options in terms of the incisions created to place the implants. Periareolar incisions are made around the areola, transaxillary incisions are made in the armpit, and inframammary incisions are made in the breast crease. Historically, most surgeons choose to place the implants under the mammary gland (subglandular placement) or under the muscles (submuscular placement), depending on the breast’s tissue availability and the preferences of the patient.

Whenever possible, Dr. Gargano’s preference is to preserve the pectoral muscle, due to the risks of long recovery time and animation deformity.

Dr. Gargano mostly uses the subfascial approach, where the implant is inserted underneath the fascia layer, preserving the pectoral muscle. The subfascial pocket will cover the implant edges, keep the implant in position, and decrease capsular contracture rates.

Quitting harmful habits like smoking is necessary before undergoing this procedure. This will help to avoid complications and prolonged recovery time.

Absolutely no excessive pressure should be applied to the breast area while patients are recovering, and stress should be avoided as much as possible. Patients will need to stay home from work for a time, as well.

YOUR BREAST AUGMENTATION SESSION

Once patients have been prepped for their breast augmentation session, anesthesia will be administered. Incisions will then be made. Next, pockets will be made in the tissues.

The implants will be inserted into the pockets, and the incisions will be closed with sutures. Fat grafting can complete the procedure to camouflage the edges of the implant and create an extra layer of coverage.

He is also a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS). Dr. Gargano received his medical degree from the Sapienza University of Rome in Italy, graduating magna cum laude. He continued his education at Sapienza University where he earned his PhD in Plastic Surgery, Human Anatomy and Dermatology, and completed his first residency in Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery.
